Dereck Byrd, Psy.d.

A foundational perspective I hold is that none of us come into this world fully equipped to deal with the myriad of challenges life throws at us. As humans, we find ways to adapt to those challenges that do not always serve us in the ways we would like, and may even lead to us feeling a great deal of pain and suffering. I see therapy as a safe place to explore how we’ve adapted, and I see my role as a therapist to be one of bearing witness to the pain and suffering on the one hand, and helping to guide clients towards healing on the other.

I earned my doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. I have trained and worked in a variety of settings including community mental health agencies, high schools, and community/psychiatric outpatient clinics. I have experience treating a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, job-related stress, educational problems, life transitions, eating disorders, and family stress and conflict. I provide therapeutic interventions utilizing mindfulness practices, relational psychodynamic frameworks, and CBT/DBT/ACT interventions.

I have experience working with individual clients, couples, families, and youth in outpatient mental health settings and have supported clients with a wide variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, disability, gender, and sexual identities. I have held individual and group therapy sessions to address emotional and relationship issues, anxiety and stress management, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress symptoms, recovery from substance use, weight management and smoking cessation, chronic pain, and life changes, including traumatic brain injury. I also specialize in treating young adults and older adults with Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia, etc.) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).

My hope is that through the therapeutic process you will gain the courage to explore the ways you have adapted that may be causing you pain or no longer be serving you, and move towards healing. I look forward to working with you.
